Professional Summary Mr. Andre van Zyl is a qualified Chemical Engineer with nearly four decades of professional experience spanning process plant design, implementation, and technology development across the steel, water treatment, mineral processing, pavement construction, soil stabilization and mining industries in Africa, Asia, South America and North America. Technical Expertise and Research Focus In the last five years, Mr. Van Zyl has driven research and innovation in eco-sustainable construction technology, specifically targeting low carbon, climate-adapted, and geotechnically resilient infrastructure solutions. His work integrates chemical engineering principles with material science to design cost-effective, durable, and environmentally responsible construction materials. His R&D activities have included: • Design and stability testing of advanced emulsions including conventional/direct (oil-in- water), invert/reverse water-in-oil and microemulsions. • Optimization of emulsification and surfactant compositions to enhance performance and shelf life of liquid, gel and solid binder formulations for low carbon footprint applications. • Comprehensive understanding of emulsion instability and breakdown mechanisms such as creaming, sedimentation, flocculation, coalescence, and phase inversion. Recent Contributions These new innovations, developed for the Carbonpave Group of Companies, provide practical, low carbon footprint solutions for: • High performance pavement and road wearing course installations, using local soils and gravels • Carbon sequestration at scale (low carbon footprint) for pavement and soil stabilization applications • Cost-effective and environmentally safe infrastructure development Mr. Van Zyl continues to pioneer advancements in green construction technologies, promoting long-term sustainability and innovation within the civil and materials engineering sectors.
