The carbon market has entered a new phase. Early experimentation has given way to scrutiny, structure, and a growing demand for integrity. In this interview with Jodi Manning, CEO of Cool Effect, she reveals why credibility defines this year's Carbon Unbound East Coast agenda, why the role of voluntary carbon markets will spark debate, and why science and community must evolve to scale effectively.
What’s one word that sums up the agenda perfectly this year?
Credibility. The voluntary carbon market is no longer in its infancy. This is the phase where science, governance, infrastructure, finance, and community impact must evolve together. Transparency on all fronts is vital for scale.
Which topic do you expect to be the most highly debated this year?
Without question, the role of voluntary carbon markets in corporate climate strategies, and the broader evolution of market structure, will spark debate. There are strong opinions about how credits should be used: for mitigation, beyond value chain mitigation, or within net-zero pathways. Or do corporate wait for compliance mechanisms to converge. That tension is healthy. If we’re serious about scaling climate action, we need thoughtful dialogue about how markets complement, not replace, aggressive emissions reductions, and how innovation can strengthen, rather than weaken, trust.
Which topic do you think attendees will walk into the room underestimating, but will leave thinking very differently about?
I think many may underestimate two interconnected things: the importance of continuous scientific investment in methodologies, and the power of community-centered climate solutions.
Early standards were designed to get us started, but methodologies must evolve as data improves and scrutiny increases. Without sustained funding and engagement from scientists, we risk stagnation. At the same time, high-integrity projects aren’t just about carbon accounting; they’re about people. When climate solutions improve livelihoods, protect biodiversity, and strengthen local resilience, that’s when finance becomes transformational.
I believe attendees will leave with a deeper appreciation that credibility depends both on rigorous science and on real-world impact.
Thank you Jodi for sharing your thoughts on this year's Carbon Unbound East Coast Agenda. You can hear more from Jodi and other leaders in the CDR space this May 19 & 20 in New York at Carbon Unbound East Coast.
